The Jazz online community is filled with smart and unique voices — including yours. If you've ever thought about amplifying your voice and viewpoints at a well-respected website, reach out and let's talk.
Salt City Hoops has always been at its best when it is giving people a place to explore their passion for taking part in the online basketball conversation. Several of the site's alumni have gone on to have careers in sports media and related fields — including as beat writers, freelancers and even working for professional sports franchises.
And now, with a refreshed website and an intriguing phase of Jazz basketball incoming, we're even more interested in reenergizing the site by finding people who are interested in connecting with the Jazz online community via a respected outlet. If that sounds like you, let's have a conversation about some of the ways you could get involved:
Regular writing: As we aim to keep this site relevant in Jazz fans' online experience, we'd love to add a couple of people who are interested in writing with a regular cadence.
Occasional writing: Maybe you don't anticipate having new insights every week, but if you want to have a place where you can share some thoughts when an idea strikes, let's talk.
Group posts: If you'd like to start with something that doesn't burn as many calories, consider jumping in when we do group posts and sharing your insights with us a couple paragraphs at a time.
Other content: Do you like to do graphics, charts, videos, podcasts, whatever? There's likely a place for that, too.
Just kicking the tires: We also occasionally feature guest posts, so if you're not sure you want to commit but want to see what it feels like to have your name on something the Jazz universe is talking about, let's give it a test run!
Here are a couple of things I'll tell you about our vision, so we're on the same page:
- We are proud to occupy a glorious little niche in the Jazz universe; we're not trying to be beat writers or news breakers, but we aspire to be more than a pure "fan site." That means we (mostly) stick to AP style and aim for objectivity and professionalism, even in posts that primarily aim to be entertaining or funny.
- We welcome all kinds of voices. I often write analytical and nerdy pieces, but I want to know what YOU are interested in bringing to our little corner of the interwebs. Our site is known as much for hilarious mailbag posts as it's known for lengthy X-and-O dissections, so we're not just after one thing. If you want to write 1,200 words on Cody Williams' pick-and-roll defense or if you want to capture some quick humorous observations, our readers want both. I love it when our analytical posts are smart, but I love it just as much when our funny posts are funny, our informational posts are illuminating, etc.
- We've gotten enough feedback from Jazz people on our content to know that they're aware of what our staff writes and says. That means we're always going to err on the side of being fair and unemotional. If you want to write a blog post about "10 reasons why I'm sick of Player X," that probably won't fit here. If you want to write fairly about how and why Player X needs to improve, bring it on!
- Salt City Hoops is a labor of love, which is a nice way of saying we're not really monetized at present. That said, while I can't promise anybody they'll get rich writing at this website, this is a great opportunity for exposure, practice, or just getting your Jazz thoughts out into the universe.
Whether you're an aspiring basketball writer or someone just looking to explore this as a hobby, reach out on socials or via the contact page and let's chat about your goals and ideas.
